'HIGH AND DRY' AT THE NEW MT. SNOWDON SUMMIT CAFE

S & P Coil Products Limited (SPC) have supplied heating equipment to the new visitors centre, Hafod Eryri, at the top of Mount Snowdon, the highest building in the England & Wales at 3,560ft (1,085m) above sea level. The new summit building replaces a building once described by Prince Charles as ‘The highest slum in Wales’.

The new building designed by architect Ray Hole, is made from local granite obtained from the Cwt y Bugail Quarry near Blaenau Ffestiniog, which forms the walls and floors of the new building.

With the wet and windy conditions associated with the mountain’s summit, where Winds can reach 150mph and the annual rainfall is more than 5m, designers of the heating system had to ensure the windows would be free from condensation. MINIB T50 trench heaters, the smallest (in depth) trench heater in the world, also have a stainless steel trough as standard and were selected as the ideal solution to keep the panoramic views visible to visitors all year round.

AIRDOR Elite Air Curtains were also used to help maintain the conditions within the summit café. With high winds and rain, the air curtains help to reduce the ingress of cold air and maintain the conditioned air within the Café. The air curtains also provide visitors with a quick ‘burst of warm air’ as they walk into the visitors centre, relief from the harsh outside conditions.
